Working hand in hand with the Human Movement Sciences Research Center (Cimohu) and the School of Physical Education, the University of Costa Rica (UCR) uses cutting-edge technology to assess and improve the physical behavior of athletes and public officials.
This is a set of evaluation procedures carried out in the Cimohu laboratories, which presents a great opportunity to strengthen the performance of both athletes and personnel specializing in safety and rescue work.
Cimohu maintains agreements and negotiations with organizations such as the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Ministry of Public Security or the Costa Rican Red Cross to improve people’s physical behavior.
Currently, there are six labs used by the research center to perform these analyses, including the biomechanics lab, which allows three-dimensional images to be generated from sensors to study people’s movements, accelerations, and velocities.
A controlled climate laboratory, where temperature, humidity and radiation can be simulated, is also used to prepare people physically and psychologically and to make important plans regarding hydration.
Francisco Síles, director of Cimohu, commented that there is a framework agreement with the Ministry of Public Safety that includes the preparation of personnel working under the concept of “tactical athlete”, which includes police officers, firefighters, rescuers, Cruzrojistas and emergency workers. employee.
This alliance aims to train people who need to be in optimal physical, mental and behavioral conditions due to emergencies, high temperatures or long transfers.
“These studies aim to train and cooperate with the Ministry of Public Security by testing strength, resilience and other aspects, as well as facing them in extreme climates or situations, which will not only benefit this population. They can better serve the community in better conditions,” he said. commented Siles.
Likewise, they maintain a formal agreement with the NOC that aims to empower Costa Rican athletes by conducting tests to improve their performance and simulating the scenarios they might encounter when competing at peak performance.
Several recent tests were carried out with national athletes Noelia and Andrea Vargas, who participated in the previous Tokyo Olympic Games. These assessments were included both in laboratories and on athletic tracks of sports facilities to have more real competitive parameters.
In addition, negotiations for an agreement with the Costa Rican Institute of Sports and Recreation (Icoder) are at an advanced stage and a service offer has been made to the Costa Rican Football Federation, although the approach has been a bit slow due to preparation issues. World.
The research center celebrated ten years of work on such methodologies in October, just as it has other mechanisms for taking measurements, such as a treadmill or an oxygen meter, in addition to the engine department, where tests are usually done with humans outdoors.
In addition to its collaborative links, the center performs such assessments, such as bone densitometry tests, muscle strength or cardiorespiratory capacity, on a permanent basis, not only for athletes, but for people who need a procedure, and the entire population at large, and it is very costly. more accessible from external places.

Recently, a new Cimohu project called “Physical, psychosocial and behavioral characterization of Costa Rican athletes” has received funding from seed funding from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. In it, tests will be carried out on about 40 national athletes.
Isaura Castillo, teacher and researcher at Cimohu and coordinator of this project, said that the main purpose for creating a knowledge bank that helps athletes will be to measure physical indicators, body composition, psychosocial aspect, behavioral indicators, among others. Along the same lines, Castillo added, the main contribution of these studies is to try to reduce the gap between the empirical development of sport and access to scientific production, and to provide evidence-based education with cutting-edge technology to a very high standard. -art technology.
